The Best Time of Year for Beach Photos in Destin and 30A, Season by Season

One of the questions I hear most is, "When is the best time of year for beach photos?" My honest answer is that there's no wrong season here on the Emerald Coast. The white sand and the water are here all year long, and every season has its own little bit of magic.
That said, each time of year feels a bit different, and knowing what to expect can help you plan. So here's my season-by-season guide for families, couples and everyone in between, whether you're staying in Destin, Miramar Beach, Santa Rosa Beach or anywhere along 30A.
Spring: fresh, bright and busy
Spring is such a happy time on the beach. Lots of families come down for spring break, and the beaches start to fill back up after the quieter winter months.
If you're coming for spring break, my best advice is simple: book your session early! Those weeks fill up quickly, and I'd hate for you to miss out on the date you want.
Spring evenings can still be a little breezy and cool, so it's smart to pack a light layer for the little ones, just in case.
Summer: the busiest (and most popular) season
Summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is our busiest time of year, and it books very fast. If you're planning a summer trip, the best thing you can do is reserve your session as soon as you book your vacation. Truly, this is the number one tip I give summer families!
Summer days are long and warm, and that's exactly why I schedule sessions at sunrise or sunset. The light is softest then, nobody is squinting, and the beaches are far less crowded. It's also a lot more comfortable for everyone, especially grandparents and little ones.
Summer can also bring afternoon storms. Please don't worry if the sky looks gray. I watch the weather closely and won't cancel too early, because many gray days end with the most beautiful sunset! If it doesn't clear, we'll reschedule during your stay, or you'll get a full refund.
A couple of summer tips:
- Choose light, breathable fabrics in simple, similar tones.
- Bring water for everyone, especially for a sunset session after a long beach day.
- Plan for bare feet. It's easiest on the sand and looks great in photos.
Fall: a hidden gem
I have a real soft spot for fall on the Emerald Coast. Once the summer rush winds down after Labor Day, the beaches tend to feel calmer and more relaxed.
Fall is a wonderful time for couples, anniversaries, proposals and vow renewals, and it's lovely for families who can travel outside the school summer break. It's also a great season to think ahead to holiday cards. Your photos are delivered to your own private online gallery, with high-resolution downloads and a print release, so you can order cards and prints however you like.
Grayton Beach, WaterColor and Seaside are especially pretty this time of year, and if you're staying in one of the 30A communities, we can often meet right at your beach access. Some communities have their own rules for photographers, and I'll make sure we follow them.
Winter: quiet beaches and cozy layers
Winter is the quietest season along the coast, and that can be a big plus for photos. Fewer people on the sand means more open, peaceful backgrounds for your session.
It can be chilly by the water, so this is the season for cozy sweaters, soft knits and layers in neutral or similar tones. Just remember the same rule as always: simple, solid colors photograph best, and too many patterns can look busy. Most of all, wear what you feel like yourself in.
Winter is also a sweet time for maternity sessions and for couples looking for a calm, romantic evening on the beach.

So, when should you book?
Here's the short version:
- Summer: book as soon as you book your trip. It fills up fast!
- Spring break: book early to secure your date.
- Fall and winter: a bit more flexible, but it's still best to reach out once your dates are set.
No matter the season, every session is at sunrise or sunset with a mix of guided poses and candid moments. I'll meet you at your beach house, or recommend one of my favorite spots nearby, from Henderson Beach State Park in Destin to the quieter stretches along 30A.
